Poultry & Waterfowl
Bystander Farm maintains a diverse and carefully managed poultry and waterfowl program designed for strong genetics, reliable egg production, and calm, homestead‑friendly birds. Our flocks are kept in separate coops to preserve breed integrity and maintain stable social groups.
Our Flocks
Mixed Layer Flock
Our main laying flock is a colorful, productive mix of heritage and hybrid breeds chosen for temperament, egg color, and year‑round reliability. This flock includes:
- Ameraucauna
- Ancona
- Rhode Island Red
- Olive Egger
- ISA Brown
- Sapphire Gem
- Salmon Favorelle
This flock is overseen by our Columbian White Ameraucauna rooster, Quentin, who maintains excellent flock harmony and contributes to a wide range of beautiful egg colors in our barnyard mixes.
Purpose of the Mixed Flock This flock is intentionally structured to produce hybrid layers that combine:
- the large, reliable egg production of Rhode Island Reds and ISA Browns
- the blue/green egg genetics from Ameraucaunas and Olive Eggers
- the temperament and hardiness of Ancona, Sapphire Gem, and Salmon Favorelle
Our goal is to create birds that lay big, colorful eggs consistently, with strong homestead‑friendly temperaments and excellent foraging ability.
Year‑Round Hatching Due to our climate and flock structure, we are able to hatch chicks nearly year‑round, depending on broody cycles and incubator scheduling.
Backyard Flock Birds Available We occasionally offer pullets or young hens from this mixed flock for homestead egg production. These birds are hardy, friendly, and excellent layers. Availability varies seasonally.
Indio Gigante Coop
We maintain a separate coop for our bonded pair of Indio Gigantes, a rare Brazilian breed known for their impressive height, gentle nature, and striking appearance. This pair is kept isolated to preserve breed purity and ensure their unique genetics remain intact.
Ameraucauna Breeding Coop
Our dedicated Ameraucauna breeding coop houses:
- Purebred Ameraucauna hens
- Our Ermine Ameraucauna rooster, Beetlejuice
This coop is managed separately to maintain clean Ameraucauna lines, consistent blue egg genetics, and the distinctive Ermine pattern carried by Beetlejuice.
Pilgrim Geese
We keep a small flock of Pilgrim geese, a calm, heritage American breed known for their sex‑linked coloring, excellent temperaments, and strong flock‑guardian instincts. Pilgrims are one of the few goose breeds where ganders and geese can be visually distinguished at hatch, making them ideal for small farms and homesteads.
Our flock consists of:
- One gander
- Three geese
They free‑range during the day, help alert the farm to visitors and wildlife, and maintain a stable social structure with minimal aggression. Pilgrims are seasonal layers and cooperative nesters, and we manage their nesting sites carefully to prevent hidden clutches and springtime chaos.
