One of the most useful diagnostic tools you can learn is an understanding of FAMACHA scoring and what it can tell you about a goats health.
The best place I’ve found online to learn this important skill is though the online FAMACHA certification offered at the University of Rhode Island.
All goats are subject to parasites, and there are many worms that prey on them. Stress events like moving to a new home, kidding, etc. can cause sudden worm bloom in a goat that can cause a very quick downturn in your goats health.
Outside of periods of stress, goats can still be negatively affected by worms in their environment. One of the best ways to tell if your goat is in need of a fecal worm count and deworming is by observing your goat’s FAMACHA score. It’s important to do this on a regular basis so that you’ll notice any changes before they become life-threatening.
I see photos posted in many online groups where people are just pulling down a goat’s eyelid and thinking that they are getting a correct FAMACHA score, so share this important and free resource as widely as possible.
